The title of the series - Lupain- is the Filipino word for land. Within the word are the letters for the word "pain." Depending on who is reading, pain can be understood as sustenance or suffering, or something else in another language. This series of large drawings is an ongoing series that began in 2016. The series emerged from a desire to find analogies to a landscape and seascape that I can no longer visit except in my memories or what appears in my dreams. Currently, the series trajectory is towards drawing as attempts to achieve a sense of place, permanence, and a safe space for healing, embodiment and interiority - through line, touch, vast areas of detail, marks, and smudges by my hands and palms on the paper, all evidence of my weight; this weight- this pressure- is the subject of the work.
